Lesson Plan for Teaching Parts of Speech
The parts of speech explain how a word is used in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech (also known as word classes)
In this Lesson Plan we’ll discuss five parts of speech which are: Noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb and verb.
Learning Objectives
After this five days lesson plan, students will be able to:
  • Understand clearly what is being said in a sentence.
  • Know how and when to use words correctly.
  • Reflect more accurately on the English language.

Monday

Noun

Definition:
A word that refers to a person, place, thing, event, substance, or quality.
Examples:
Man, mountain, state, ocean, country, building, cat, airline.


I’ll use physical objects Letter blocks, deck of cards charts and other visual instruments to boost students understanding.

Students will be able to
 1-Define and provide examples of nouns
2-Identify various objects (e.g., door, ceiling, desk)

Tuesday

Pronoun

Definition:
A word that is used instead of a noun or noun phrase.
Examples:
He, It, You, I, They, We, Who, Him, Them Anyone, Something, Nobody.

I’ll use different activities to teach pronouns, by showing videos and other class objects

Students will be able to:
1-State the definition of a pronoun.
2-Recognize pronouns and distinguish them from other parts of speech.
3-Use the correct form of pronouns in sentences.

Wednesday

Adjective

Definition:
A word naming an attribute of a noun, such as sweet, red, or technical.

After a brief description of adjective I’ll ask individual students to talk about adjectives by involving them in an activity.

The students will be able to correctly identify adjectives, distinguish shades of meaning among closely related adjectives, to use adjectives correctly in their writing.


Thursday

Adverb

Definition:
Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb
Examples:
Quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really, slowly, jump quietly,

I’ll line up the students and tell them the action they have to do during the race and then shout go. Actions + adverbs include: skip slowly, jump quietly, hop carefully, run backwards, walk quickly and so on.

Students will be able to articulate that adverbs modify verbs by telling how something is done, when something is done, where something is done, or modify adverbs or adjectives by telling to what extent.


Friday

Verb

Definition:
A word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence.
Examples:
Run, jump, dance, write, kick, think, ponder, guess, imagine, wonder, etc.


I’ll use the verbs poster, banner and labels on class displays.

Students will be able to give appropriate verbs to any person or animal the teacher tells to them to describe.
